A heritage restored in 2026
Preserving Livesay and Livesey history, genealogy, photographs, and the fellowship of generations.
The story of the surname
Society research has long proposed that the Livesay and Livesey names may be connected with the Battle of Brunanburh, fought in 937 and traditionally associated in this account with the area near Burnley in present-day Lancashire, England.
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records Athelstan’s great victory over an invading alliance. So great was the victory that people spoke of it with awe for generations. One early name form explored in the Society archive is Leofsiege, interpreted as “dear victory.” The proposed spelling progression moves from Leofsiege to Leofsy and through other forms to the variants used today.
We are also working to document evidence that may trace the family name still further back, possibly to the middle of the eighth century.
Research note: This origin account is a longstanding Society interpretation and remains a subject for further documentation—not a settled etymology. More background can be found on the Family History page and near the bottom of Places & Heritage.
The restoration of the Society
The original Livesay Historical Society grew from avid researchers documenting the family’s rich heritage and genealogy in the 1950s. It went on to enjoy a long and meaningful history of national reunions, newsletters, genealogical research, and sharing information about Livesay family heritage.
After the Society’s leaders grew older, Annette Livesay, who maintained the website at LHSociety.org, passed away. The organization’s leadership officially dissolved its 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 2012.
But, as Scripture speaks of bringing beauty from ashes, we are restoring what was lost.
